Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended, but this one thing I do: forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ( Phil 3:13-14)
Different junctions in life tend to bring about obscurity. Generation X has been identified as a group of individuals born roughly between the early 1960s and 1980s. This demographic of people, in comparison to the Baby Boomers and Millennials, have been isolated and overlooked and have yet to receive attention or support in their endeavors, both in the secular world and in some Christian communities. The reason for their lack of support or attention lies in the focus of Christian leaders. In some churches, more attention and focus are given to the Millennials and younger generations. Where does this leave Generation X?
Sandwiched between the Baby Boomers and the Millennials, what is next for Gen X? At this point in life, Gen Xers have come to a crossroads where they need to make crucial decisions for their future. Having experienced significant historical events like the end of the Cold War, the rise of personal computing, economic shifts, and being latchkey kids caring for themselves, they have gotten lost in the middle. However, despite their situations, they have adapted and become more independent, contributing to their self-reliant mindset that camouflages their need for external attention or validation.
Furthermore, Generation X has made many significant contributions in various fields and continues to influence society, culture, and the workplace meaningfully. The question one must ask is, “ Why are they able to contribute in the secular world and not in their Christian communities? This generation must become strategic in everything they do to move forward. God has a plan for all people; now is the time for this demographic to find out where they fit. They must know their identity and, with all due diligence, move forth with clarity and persistence. Generation X, you have come to a crossroads; where do you go? Which way will you choose?
Proverbs 14:12 reads, “ There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.” Death results from sin (Romans 6:23). Therefore, one must choose to do what is right in the sight of God and man. In many cases, the things we do right in our minds are sinful in God’s eyes because of the motive behind it. Proverbs 16: 2-3 reads,“ All man’s ways are clean in his own eyes, but the Lord weigheth the spirits. Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
